A note on identity: Thomas was a very popular Curtis given name, the Find A Grave: Memorial #36262529 has conflated two Thomases. They are using the baptismal date from this Thomas and the death date of Thomas of Kent. The 1631 death date has become a frequent mis-statement about this Thomas, who clearly was buried 6 Jan 1605/6. A Correction has been sent.

Biography

Baptism

Thomas Curtis was baptized 25 Aug 1560, in the parish of Nazing, Essex, England.^[1][2] His parents were not listed on the church register.

William Curtis, died in 1585, in Nazeing, England, leaving a will, that named his son, Thomas, and his wife, Agnes, as executors of his estate.^[3]

Marriage

He married, first, August 24, 1585 - Thomas Curtis and Mary Camp, in Nazeing, Essex, England.^[1][2] She was buried at Nazeing on 24 November 1594.^[2] They had four children: Martha, Mary, Elizabeth, and a son, still living in 1585.^[3]

Thomas Curtis married, second, 3 July 1596 Mary Shelley^[2] (her second also) She was named in his will.^[3]

Will

The will of Thomas Curtis was dated 13 Dec 1604, and presented to court 1 Jan 1605. In his will he named his daughters Martha, Mary, Elizabeth, his wife Mary (his second wife). A son is mentioned, but not by name.^[5][6]

William and Thomas were baptized at Nazing in the years between the marriage of Thomas and Mary Camp and her death. Thomas (child) died young so cannot be the son named in Thomas' will, leaving William to be the unnamed son in Thomas' will.

Note on son William: The profile of emigrant William Curtis in The Great Migration Begins (page 500) names William's parents as William Curtis and his wife Agnes (maiden name unknown), but a correction in the "Addenda and Corrigenda" (page 2090) identifies them as Thomas Curtis and Mary Camp.^[7][8]
