Biography

Thomas Cushman was born on February 25, 1707 in Plymouth, Plymouth, Province of Massachusetts Bay. His parents were Robert Cushman and Persis Lewis.

He married Mehitable Faunce on February 18, 1738

Together they had the following children:

  6. Bartholomew Cushman
  7. Mary Cushman
  8. Sarah Cushman
  9. Desire Cushman
  10. Amaziah Cushman
  11. Elisha Cushman
  12. Samuel Cushman

On 14 January 1748, it was reported in the newspaper, "We hear from Kingston in the county of Plymouth, that the throat distemper has been exceeding bad there, and that six children in the family of Mr. Thomas Cushman had died of it, four of them about a fortnight ago, with the space of eight hours of each other, and the other two last week, so that the family is left childless. Five of the children were Mr. Cushman's, the other a relation."[1]

He did not marry Alice Hayward, however, they had one child together.

Probate

The will of Thomas Cushman of Kingston, yeoman was dated 16 February 1768 and proved on 1 August 1768 in Plymouth. He mentions his children, Amaziah Cushman, Elisha Cushman, James Cushman, John Cushman, Desire Cushman, and Sarah Cushman. He appoints his brother John Faunce (executor) to be guardian to Desire, James, and John, and John Gray (executor) as guardian of Sarah, Amaziah, and Elisha. His inventory was taken on 10 August 1768 in Kingston.[2]

In 1769, Jabez Washburn Jr., of Kingston was appointed guardian of his sons, James, and John.[3]

In 1771, an account of his estate by the only surviving executor, John Gray was recorded which included funeral charges, mourning apparel for the daughters, Desire and Sarah, as compensation for nursing their father in his last sickness, provision for the family, debts paid, repairs to the house, legacies paid, and administration fees.[4]

In 1779, his real estate was divided into four equal parts and set out to his sons, Amaziah, Elisha, James, and John.[5]
