Biography

Thomas was born about 1770 in Albemarle County, Virginia. He is the son of William Dalton and Rachel Harris. He passed away in May 1864 in Rockingham County, North Carolina. (Items in his estate were sold on 21 September 1864.[1])

Thomas Dalton married first Mary "Polly" Deatherage about 1790. He married second Charlotte (Joyce) Deatherage, widow of his late wife's brother, George Deatherage. Thomas is in the 1810-1840 censuses of Rockingham Co., NC, the 1850 census of Stokes Co., NC, and the 1860 census of Rockingham Co., NC. Based on his will, Thomas's children were:

  1. Sarah "Sally" DALTON; m. Garrett WATTS
  2. Robert DALTON
  3. William DALTON, b. 30 Jul 1804
  4. Elizabeth DALTON, b. 1806; m. John K. JOYCE
  5. James DALTON[2]

He wrote his will on 12 Mar 1858. He named his son William, his daughter Elizabeth Joyce, heirs of Garrett, heirs of son Robert Dalton, and grandsons William F. and John Dalton. He named his son William his executor. The will was witnessed by Nath'l. Dodd, and T.R. Stone. Stone was dead when the will was probated.[3]
