Biography

William was born in 1853. William Dalton ... He passed away in 1929. [1]

Professor William Marion Dalton was a highly respected educator in Mississippi and wrote weekly news articles of local interest for various newspapers beginning about 1901. He used a different "pen name" depending on which community was the subject and which paper contained the article.

For Cumberland news prior to April 1901, in an unknown local newspaper, he used “Philomath”.

For Cumberland news from May 1901 to 1903, in the Maben Meteor, he used “Uncle Cyrus”.

For Dancy news from March 1906, in the Maben Advance, he used “Observer”.

Copies of many of the articles were saved by him and have been complied by Lyon-277.

March 30, 1911 from the Pontotoc Sentinel

W. M. Dalton was born in Lawrence county, Tennessee, but has lived most of his life in Mississippi. He received a good academic education in the schools of the country; chose teaching as a profession and after marrying, he, by home study, taking private courses and going to school some, acquired a liberal education.

He served one term as Superintendent of Education of Choctaw county, was principal of the Dido Male and Female Academy twelve years, of New Liberty High School for five years, of The Cumberland Normal Institute five years, of The Dancy High School four years, and has taught as principal of Algoma High School two years.

He has taught higher English and physics in the State Normal under Supt. Whitfield (and) has also conducted several county institutes.

He stood the pedagogical examinations sent out from the State University. Mr. Dalton has also lectured before institutes and written quite a number of educational articles.

He has prepared more than one hundred students either for college, for entrance in professional schools, or for teaching in the public schools. He numbers among his friends, hundreds of grateful students who were his former pupils.

Modesty forbids his quoting many complimentary press notices of his past work. Mr. Dalton has taught more than fifty classes in vocal music, including two or three normals. Several of his musical compositions are published in music books of several publishers.

He is a Missionary Baptist and has served as Sabbath school superintendent for twenty-six years of his life.

He buys and reads many professional books on teaching and keeps in close touch with all the up-to-date methods in educational work.
