Sarah Caroline Damerell was born on 10 April 1870 [1] in Kingsbridge, Devon, England to Henry Damerell and Jane (Ball) Damerell. Her father, a mariner, eventually became a steam stoker in the Royal Navy. Her mother died when Sarah was only ten, and her father did not remarry. Sarah - or 'Catherine' as she preferred to be called - lived with her four older sisters and two brothers in the village of Charleton, Devon.
On 18 May 1890, [2] Sarah married Philip Blight Pearse from South Brent, Devon, and in the 1891 census, the couple is living at the Seven Stars Hotel in Kingsbridge - and probably involved in the running of it, since it belonged to Philip's innkeeper father.
