NOTES for SON, GEORGE:

George grew up working on the family farm working and learning alongside his father. During the winter he would spend his time attending classes at Marietta college and attending the University of Ohio at Athens. This education prepared him to enter into business with his father, George Dana, Sr. The firm going by the name of George Dana and Son.

The George Dana and Son engaged in general farming, nursery business to include the wool business. George would often accompany several flatboat cargoes of Dana Farm products down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to arrive at New Orleans. They expanded their business to include the production of cider vinegar.

On 22 Sep 1816, George would take Deborah Ames Fisher as his wife. Rev. Samuel P. Robbins would conduct this ceremony.

George is considered one of the pioneer nurserymen and horticulturists. he promoted the interests of this industry within the Ohio Valley. During the years of 1862 to 1867, George served as the President of the Washington County Agricultural Society and was an active member of the Ohio Horticultural Society.

When the railroad came to Marietta, George, being an informed man with broad views, a strong mind, considered by most to make sound judgments, became the Baltimore & Ohio Short Line Director in 1872 up and until it was merged with the Cincinnati, Washington & Baltimore Railroad in 1884.

It was noted he was "in easy circumstances, universally respected for sound sense and integrity."
