Biography

William Daumarle was born about 1320 and died in 1361.

8 September 1350 : Rotherhithe. Pardon, in consideration of good service done in a conflict on sea with the Spaniards by William de Aumarle of Wodebury, for the death of Andrew le Spicer of Yevilchestre; who has gone on the king's service in the company of Thomas de Bello Campo, earl of Warwick. By king at the instance of the earl. [1]

  • Somerset inquest taken at Somerton, Monday the feast of St Valentine, 36EIII. The manor of Lymyngton held jointly with John Dabernon, Henry Percehay, John Boys and Thomas Aumarle, who survive, to them and their heirs and assigns, of the heir of John de Beauchamp of Somerset, a minor in the king's wardship by a moiety of a knight's fee. He died on Monday after St Nicholas last. William his son, aged 12 years and more, is his heir.
  • Devon inquest taken at Wodebery, Monday in the fourth week of Lent 36EIII. Two parts of the manor of Wodebery held of the king in chief by knight's service for two parts of a knight's fee. He held no other lands in the escheator's bailiwick.

DAMARELL IV WILLIAM Son and heir of William III Damarell

William, son and heir of William Damarell and Isabel Meriet was aged 12 years at the time of his father's death. He died without heirs of his body 15 months after his father. HE WAS OMITTED FROM THE ABOVE PROFILE.

[Calendar Fine Rolls EIII] 2 May 1362. Order to Thomas Cheyny, escheator in the county of Devon, to take into the king's hands the lands whereof William son of William de Alba Marlia, 'chivaler,, who held in chief, was seised in his demesne as of fee on the day of his death and to make inquisition touching his lands and heir

[Calendar Inquisitions Post Mortem EIII V11] No. 273 William son of William de Alba Marlia, knight. Writ 30 April 36EIII. Inquest for Devonshire taken at Wodebery, 16 May 36EIII. Two parts of the manor of Wodebury as in the last inquisition. He died on Saturday in Easter week last. Margaret de Alba Marlia and Elizabeth de Alba Marlia, his sisters, aged respectively 19 years and more and 17 1/2 years, are his heirs.

[Calendar Fine Rolls EIII] 26 May 1362 Westminster. Order to Thomas Cheyne, escheator in the county of Devon, pursuant to an inquisition made by him shewing that William son of William de Alba Marlia, 'chivaler,' held in chief in his demesne as of fee on the day of his death two parts of the manor of Wodebury, county Devon, by knight service, and that Margaret de Alba Marlia and Elizabeth de Alba Marlia, his sisters, are his next heirs, Margaret being 19 years of age and more and Elizabeth 17 1/4 years, to take the fealties of Margaret and Elizabeth, make a partition of the premises into two equal parts, and deliver to Margaret and Elizabeth their respective pourparties; as the king has respited their homages until Michaelmas next.

NOTE – There were at least three men by the name of William Alba Marlia, Aumarle and Daumarle living in the first few decades of the 14th century, and unless the entries specifically refer to William of Woodbury they have been omitted.

[Calendar Patent Rolls EIII] 8 March 1340 Westminster. Grant for life, in consideration of long service, to William Daumarle, king's yeoman, of the farm of 16/ which the men of the town of Bridport rent yearly at the Exchequer. Mandate in pursuance to the bailiffs of the town.

Richard Coterel, aged 60 years and more, agrees that the said Margaret is 15 years of age and more, and says that on the morrow of St Margaret, 21EIII, he met William de Aumarle at Lovepitte coming from Hemyok, who there told him of the birth of the said Margaret and that he was her godfather.
