Biography

Bill Dunkley (Dunkley-71) and Fanning (Fanning-475) are co-operating on the clean up of this profile. They have adopted a number of orphaned profiles in order to facilitate this process. They are direct descendants of either the Davy Family or the Klein Family. Both are pre-1700 certified and Bill is a member of the NNS group.

The variations in spelling of the last name in the pre-1700 profiles (parents are PPP'd) complicates the procedure. 1700 seems to be the point at which the various branches determine their spelling preference. We are therefore using the spelling that is most prevalent for each sibling's descendants.

Other PM's will be consulted of course and if anyone has proof of LNAB, before or after we clean up this profile, please feel free to contact one of us. We will also inform the NNS if it appears to conflict with Ancestors of these profiles, even though they are Post-1700.

Thanks from both.

Note: Families often found themselves on opposite sides of the conflict during the American Revolution. The Davy/Davids/Davis family was a typical example. Of the 4 brothers with known children, 2 of them (John and Peter) had Loyalist leanings, and 2 other brothers (Thomas and Lewis) had Patriot leanings. At least one of Lewis' Patriot sons, Thomas, was killed at the Battle of Oriskany in 1777.

"Lewis" was baptised in Schenectady DRC on 4 May 1710,[1] sponsors Philip Schuyler & Andrew McKhant.[2]

Timeline

1731: Referred to as "Ludovikus David" in the Marriage Registry of the Dutch Reformed Protestant Church, Schenectady, New York.[3]

  • Davis, Ludovikus, Maria Clement, banns 17 Apr 1731, mar. May 14. Ludovikus Davis, j.m. (= young man) born here, lives Maquaasland, Maria Clement, j.d. (= young woman) born and lives in Woestyne.

Ludovicus Davids & his wife Maria Clement are living in the Maquaasland (Dutch for "Mohawks' land"), and Maria is referred to as the daughter of Peter Clement of Woestyne (today = Rotterdam Junction, NY).[4]

1754: "Ludwig Devi and wife Maria" served as sponsors at baptism of Ludwig's niece Magdalena Davy (daughter of Peter) in Lutheran Trinity Church of Stone Arabia, New York.[5]

1758: Lewis Davis & his wife Maria Clement served as sponsors at the baptism of their grandson Pieter, son of Annatje Davis and Frans Pruym.

Research Notes on Children

Below is family information compiled from various sources -- church records, Rootsweb trees with citations, Ancestry trees with citations. The purpose is to identify leads for further exploration:

Confirmed Children:

  • Catharina DAVIS b: probably Ft. Hunter, NY; baptised 19 Dec 1731; married Thomas Beerop/Bearhop (1724-84) born Scotland
    • Note: See mention of Catharina's first cousin "Nelly Davis" on the profile of Nelly's father Thomas Davy. It appears that the Davis cousins married Thomas Beerop and John Berobe. Cousins marrying brothers, or identity confusion?
  • Annetje DAVIS b: ABT 1733 in prob Ft. Hunter, NY; married Franciscus PRUYN of Albany NY
  • Captain Johannes John DAVIS b: 1738[6] in prob Herkimer Co., NY [+ Cecilia/Cicely Connor[7] b. 1739 daughter of Edward + Ann; in Aug 1761]. Captain John Davis, Col. Frederick Fisher's Regiment. Tryon County Militia, lived in Kingsborough Patent circa 1770, in Canajoharie circa 1790.[8][9]
  • Thomas DAVIS 1744-77, born in Ft. Hunter, NY. Married Elizabeth. Their 2 children received an Orphan's Half-Pay Pension for 7 years as a result of their father being killed in the Battle of Oriskany while serving in the Canajoharie District Regiment of Tryon County Militia.
    • Note: On Ancestry.com, the "Strickland Family Tree" (consulted in 2019) identifies these 2 children as Hannah Anna Davey (1769–1850; + Peter DeWaltz) & Henry Davey (1774–1829; + Margaret Snyder). Hannah lived in Montgomery & Otsego counties & had at least 12 children. Henry was born & died in Otsego County & had at least 4 children.

Possible Children:

  • Jacob DAVIS Sr. b: ABT 1750 in prob Fort Hunter, NY; + Catherine RIEMENSNEIDER (Snyder). Confusion has arisen between Jacob and Jost Henry Davis who married Catherine Bartram. Although the latter was born in Germany, according to the affidavit submitted by his son Daniel, during probate proceedings, both men appear to have had sons named Daniel who were born about the same time, married a Catherine, and lived in Herkimer County.[10]

Family connections: A first cousin of Thomas and John also fought as a Patriot in the same Battle of Oriskany. He was Daniel, son of their uncle Thomas. Another first cousin Richard Davis, son of their uncle Johannes, was on the opposing side (Loyalist) as a drummer in the King's Royal Regiment of New York.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Lewis by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Lewis:
