Biography

Elizabeth's age varies according to the principle source for the date as reported in census records. Her birth about 1814 in Kentucky has been based on the 1850 census which showed she was 36. ^[1] However in the 1860 census her age was given as 49, born 1811 in Virginia. ^[2]

Evidence supporting her birth about 1811 is supported by the fact she married in 1830 when she would have been 19. If born about 1810 she could have been one of four females in the under 10 age category in the 1820 census for her father William Deal's household in Floyd County, Kentucky.^[3] The 1830 census for the household of William Deal (age 60-70) was adjoining Malachi Deal (40-50) and Joiner Deal (20-30). Living next door to the Deals was Obediah Blankenship whose son Hiram married Elizabeth Deal in July 1830. The female age categories in the William Deal household included: 1 female age 20-30 (born 1800-1810) ; 2 females age 40-50; and 1 female age 60-70. ^[4] Since there were no females in Obediah Blankenship's household in a proper age category to be Elizabeth the presumption must be the census was taken before Elizabeth's marriage (July 1830) and thus she was one of the females in William Deal's household. The only age category she could fill would be age 20-30 (born 1800-1810).

Continuing the examination of census records with 1870 showed she was 61, born North Carolina.^[5] Thus no concrete decision can be made for Elizabeth's exact date of birth using census records.

Adding to the confusion is the fact there were two women that might be Elizabeth in the 1880 census. The first woman was age 54 born Kentucky.^[6] the second was Betty, age 60, born Virginia. ^[7]. Both women had husband's named Hiram Blankenship. Were they two different women or were they enumerated twice in two different locations?

Elizabeth Deal married 13 Jul 1830 in Pike County, Kentucky Hiram Blankenship.^[8][9]

She died after 1880.

Research Notes

Deal appears to be the correct last name spelling because Dial was a variation used only for Elizabeth on FHS K4V7-L85 and no source for it is listed. Elizabeth's father was shown as William DEAL providing further circumstantial evidence Deal was the common spelling for the surname. ^[10] It is possible a researcher misinterpreted an "i" for an "e" in the old handwriting.
