George DeBord was born Feb. 18, 1728 in Richmond Co. VA., a son of John DeBord and wife Elizabeth according to the register of North Farnham Parish Church.

George Deboard was in NC by 1761 when he entered 700 ac. in Granville Co. on Lynches Creek (area later Bute Co. NC & now lies in Franklin Co. NC).

He was still in Bute Co. in 1766 according to the tax list.

By 1775 he is in Surry Co. NC according to the tax list there.

In a 1777 Warren Co. NC deed between a Danl. Crabb and a Jn. Hawkins, both of Bute Co. NC mentions the "land formerly belong to George DeBord", on Linches Creek.

The 1782 Tax List for Surry Co. NC and Journal of Surry Co. General Association has George Deboard with no land, but, with 2 horses and 5 cattle.

He is living near john Elsberry in a part of Surry Co. that later became Yadkin Co. On the 1790 census for Surry Co. NC George DeBord has 2 males over 16 years of age believed to be sons George (Jr.) and John. The diary of elder George DeBord's granddaughter, Martha DeBord Hill, proves that George and her father John are later in Rutherford Co. NC.

In 1795 George DeBord purchased 100 ac. on Fisher Creek from George Long, according to Surry Co. NC Deed Book F. In 1795, 1796 & 1797 George DeBord paid no poll tax on this land. This would indicate that he was exempted from paying the poll tax due to his age (born 1728).

George DeBord was in Rutherford Co. NC by 1816 according to a diary entry dated Feb. 29, 1816 by Martha DeBord (Hill), "Both sets of grandparents came over last night....Granny DeBoard told us about their trip down from Virginia....Food was a real problem on that journey....most of them survived, as rabbits, squirrels, and wild turkey were plentiful but depended on a good aim--before the trip was over Grandpa had become an ace marksman !"

Though the wife of George DeBord is usually listed as a Mary Whitehead this has never been proven, nor are there any records presented so far to indicate this. Ancient George DeBord moved with relatives to Washington Co. VA. in an area that is today Smyth Co. He died there Apr. 22, 1820 and was buried in St. Clair Bottom Bap. Cemetery. He must have been well thought of by family and friends because they got him a good inscribed tombstone which has survived until this day.

This Apr. 22, 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of his passing. His tombstone reads he was born May 10, yet his church record says he was born or christened Feb. 18. The St. Clair Bottom Primitive Baptist Church, est. 1775, is located in what is now Smyth Co. VA., at the intersection of Old Airport Rd. & Riverside Rd. This is still a lovely rural area. His grave and original tombstone reads, "George DeBoard May 10, 1728 Apr. 22, 1820". Next to him, "Reuben DeBoard 1758-1840", then, "Sarah wife of Reuben DeBoard 1767-1830". The graves are away from the church and near the road. The above written by Dennis C. Stewart (16676). [1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:

Please contact me if you or a male DeBorde (any spelling) you know of has done a YDNA test or would like to do one. My grandmother (a DeBorde) was an only child so I do not have access to the YDNA testing in our immediate family.

DeBord-230 and Debord-78 appear to represent the same person because: Exact dates and same child
