Biography

Son of William Reed and Sarah Ann Sipe Deeter. Husband of Maude Edgell Deeter. Six children.

John Stutsman Deeter Jr. was born on a farm 5 miles North of Muncie, Ind. and was named for his grandfather John Stutsman Deeter. In 1881 when he was 10 years old the family moved to Milford, Ind. where he grew to manhood and was married to Maude Edgell, daughter of a Neighbor. They lived on a farm a short distance south of his father's home. Here their first 5 children were born.

In August of 1910 John moved his family to Calhan, Colo. where their daughter Mildred was born. They "proved up" on a 320 acre farm (homestead) then sold and moved to Waldren, Ark. where they bought a 150 acre farm. After 2 1/2 years they moved again, this time to Morningsport, La. where the men worked in the oilfields. About this time John and William Worth spent a short time in New York while Maude, George, Hoy and Mildred visited with an aunt in Missouri. They all met in Burkburnett, Tex. and lived there from 1918 until 1923 when the family moved to Burbank, Cal. The men worked there as mechanics.

John had worked as a mechanic most of his life and had lost part of a hand as the result of an accident involving heavy machinery. He died May 15, 1934 and was buried in Valhalla Cemetery Burbank, Cal. Maude died 6/15/1955 and was buried beside her husband. (Eller 1981, pp. 31-32)

Memories of Uncle John, by Bernice (Deeter) Eller (ibid)

"Uncle John was a little shorter than his brothers. He had dark curly hair and was blind in his right eye, the result of a childhood accident. He loved to fish and hunt and liked to be on the move. ... [He was a] dreamer who loved to work on inventions. In fact, ... he spent hours at his workbench working on them."
