Biography

Black Sea Germans
Wilhelm Delzer was a Black Sea German.

Birth

Wilhelm was born on October 6, 1879 in the village of Worms in the Beresan district of the Odessa area and Black Sea region of South Russia to Andreas Delzer Sr. and Katharina (Nuss) Delzer. He was the seventh of their 8 children. Wilhelm was baptized in the Lutheran church in Worms on November 18, 1879.[1][2]


Immigration

On October 29, 1901, at the age of 22, Wilhelm arrived in New York, traveling from Antwerp, Belgium aboard the S.S. Friesland. He was traveling with his parents and 2 siblings.[3]


Family

On July 12, 1908, at the age of 28, Wilhelm married Emilia Wohlgemuth (1889-1970) in Max, ND.[4][2]

Death

On January 20, 1940, at the age of 60, Wilhelm passed away in Minot, ND. He is buried in Garrison Cemetery in Garrison, ND[5][6]

Obituary[2]
Wilhelm Delzer was born 6 Oct 1879 in Worms, S. Russia. In early childhood he came with his parents to Johannestal where he grew up. He was baptised and confirmed by Pastor D. Steinwand. In ---- he with his parents left their home in Johannestal and came to America settling first in Eureka, SD and then establishing a homestead at Wishek, ND. After that, Brother Delzer moved to a homestead 2 miles east and 8 miles south of Benedict, ND. On 12 July 1908 he and Emilie Wolgemuth were married. They were blessed with 8 children of which 2 preceded their father in death. Those mourning their father's death are: Adolph, Underwood, ND, Emil and Ernest both of ----, Mrs. Paulina Steinert, Underwood, Alma and ---- who are both still at home. During the last year of his life, Brother Delzer often complained of stomach ache and on 10 Jan. the pain became unbearable. So he underwent a serious operation in the hospital at Minot, ND. He recovered well and was expecting to go home, But God's ways are not man's ways. On Saturday, 10 days after his operation, about 12 noon, he became very sick and died 30 minutes later at the age of 60 years, 3 months and 14 days. Borther Delzer was a true and faithful member of our St. Johannes Church. For many years where he took care of the Brotherhood and had many friends. Many will miss him. Besides his wife, and children he is survived by 2 brothers and 3 sisters, Christian, Napoleon, Heinrich, Benedict, Katharina Trautmann, Eureka, SD, Eva Boehler, St. Paul, MN Sophia Wetzel, Wishek, ND as well as many other relatives and friends. Age 45, living in Snake Creek, McLean, ND with his wife and 5 children.[10]
1930 U.S. Census:
Age 50, living in Snake Creek, McLean, ND with his wife and 5 children. He was working as a farmer.[11]
