Biography

Charles Dement (ca.1740-1820) was probably the son of John Dement of Bertie Co., North Carolina. He married Selah Thomas. They were the parents of nine children. Family members were settled in several locations, including Sumner and Rutherford Counties, Tennessee and Madison and Lauderdale Counties, Alabama. Charles and Selah were buried in Madison County, Alabama[1]

CHARLES DEMENT'S impact on Middle Tennessee is best reflected by his descendants. Two of his sons, ABNER and CADER, were among the first residents in Rutherford County. In fact, they signed a historic petition which established Rutherford County from its parent counties, Davidson and Williamson. the petition was dated August 10, 1803 and Rutherford County was organized on January 3, 1804. They probably lived on the 1000 acres plantation on the Main Fork of the Stones River, in the Smyrna/Old Jefferson area today. CADER DEMENT was a large landowner and planter who was given power of attorney by his father CHARLES on December 26, 1816. The land involved was the aforementioned 1000 acres plus the 680 acres on the East Fork of the Stones River. Cader left many descendants in Middle Tennessee and served in the War of 1812. ABNER DEMENT acquired 3 land tracts totaling 816 acres from JOHN DONALSON in 1817 in the Lascassas area of Rutherford County. The original private residence stands On the Cainsville Pike and is registered as a National Historic Site. ABNER was killed by a slave, intestate, in 1825. His minor heirs were WILLIAM, JOHN, & DAVID, who were reared by ELIZABETH DEMENT, ABNER'S Widow.

JOHN, when of age, remained on the residence. His brother DAVID DEMENT settled nearby along Bradley's Creek. DAVID died in 1907, having fathered 12, children by 2 wives. He is buried behind his home, which still stands on Bradley's Creek Road. His Great Grandson, DAVID BARTON DeMent, Jr., was a prominent attorney in Murfreesboro. He also served in the State House of Representatives and Senate for 10 years with distinction. A World War 11 veteran, he died at the age of 52. On January 26, 1965 a Senate Joint Resolution was adopted and later approved which recognized his numerous contributions.

CHARLES DEMENT was a true Middle Tennessee pioneer and patriot, who immigrated to this area by covered wagon and flat boat from North Carolina several years before Tennessee statehood. Two of his seven sons were directly involved in the establishment of Rutherford County in 1804. Many of CHARLES descendants remain in Rutherford County, and along with others who did relocate, continue to shape Middle Tennessee and the nation as educators, homemakers, law enforcers, physicians, ministers agrarians, public servants, and etc.[2]

The Coat of Arms: three little mountain peaks of gold on blue field surmounted by crest of a Count. They also had a crest with a coronet given them by Henry IV of Navarre. Changes in the name became: DeMint, Dement, De Mint, De Ment. Charles De Ment came to Tennessee in 1798 in what is now known as Rutherford County. Early land records indicate he first owned 1,500 acres in Davidson County, Metro District. It was then District No. 1 and on the east side main fork of Stones River. His vast plantation holdings lay in the general area of what is now Smyrna, TN. It's soil was cultivated by numerous slaves (traditionally 75). Charles was a man of prominence in the area and held responsible positions at that time. He was the father of Abner, Cader, Charles Jr. and other children. I have the line until 1724, need more info e-mail me **** Charles Dement Per "Dement's Through the Ages", Charles could weave and spin yarn. Much discussion has been made whether Thomas M. Dement was a son of Charles and Selah Dement because in Charles' will, all the children or grandchildren are named in the will except Thomas. However, in 1989, Betsy Keefe found Sumner Co., TN records concerning Thomas M. Dement, Birdie Mae Rogers located court records in the Alabama Archives and we have a copy of a letter that a great-grandson wrote stating that Thomas' great grandmother was a Cherry before she became a Dement. Even though we have not found that marriage of Thomas M. Dement and Elizabeth Cherry Robertson, the documents we now have, prompted us to join the information we have had previously on Thomas M. Dement, listing him as a son of Charles and Selah Thomas Dement. The descendants of Charles and Selah Dement have searched for years to find their marriage license, but to no avail. We do know that Selah was Mrs. Charles Dement before October 1780 when her father's will was processed through probate court. This family scattered in many directions, once they reached TN. We have found evidence of their being in Sumner Co., TN, Rutherford Co., TN, and finally Charles moved to Madison Co., AL and died there near Huntsville, AL. The children scattered in many directions; some moved into AL with Charles and Selah. Others have been located in Lauderdale Co., AL, Rutherford County, TN, Franklin County, IL and Sumner Co., TN. We have learned since 1989 that Clara Dement listed as a Clarissa Edwards Dement was actually an adopted child (nee Clarissa Edwards). Milberry Dement McReynolds' descendants were located in IN. The sons were well-established, respectable citizens of their communities. Abner was Sheriff of Rutherford Co., TN in 1825. David was prominent in Lincoln-Douglas debates in IL. Cader was a large land owner in Rutherford Co., TN. ****************************** http://www.we3dements.com/roots/Dement/Dement.genrep.html Generation No. 6 6.
