Biography

My beginnings, and why I'm here

I grew up in a small New Hampshire town, in a white Cape Code with green trim. My father was born in the living room. I still have the deed showing my great-grandparents' original purchase.

My family helped settle the town in the 1700s, moving to the NH wild from settlements in Massachusetts. I spent a lot of my youth riding my bicycle across town, often ending up at one or another of the town's older cemeteries. Dad is buried at Meetinghouse, deep in the woods halfway down a dirt road. The road is bordered by a dry stacked stone wall. Over the trees you can see the top of Mount Monadnock. It's peaceful there, and lovely, in a way that only a New England graveyard deep in the woods can be.

When I was little, Meetinghouse was one of my favorite places. I used to wander the graveyard looking at the names and the markings. I would wonder about the lives of the people buried there. I never realized I was descended from so many of them.

But there is the start of my love for genealogy.

About me

I am descended from multiple Mayflower families (definitely two, likely three, possibly four, but I don't have all the information yet,) as well as many of the Puritan Great Migration families; I'm still trying to compile a complete list of these ancestors.

I am also descended from Banfield Capron, who emigrated from England in 1674 to Massachusetts. Information on that line was well documented by Phil DeSilva on www. capronfamily. com (defunct some time in the early 2020s, but possibly still available as an archive on web.archive.org.

My maternal grandfather and maternal great-grandparents were all Finnish immigrants. That side of the family has proved more difficult, although recently I made contact with a distant relative who provided information that will help fill in many blanks.

Meanwhile, my paternal great-great-grandfather's line came from France by way of Quebec. It's been an education to realize how much easier it is to do research in your own language than one you don't understand.

My family moved to the Carolinas when I was ten, and I have lived there for most of my life. I attended Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. I owned a bookstore outside of Raleigh, NC for over a decade before closing down in the early part of the 2010's.
