John Denny "settled on the farm where Daniel Stoltz lived and died on Bull Run Creek." [1] He is found on the Surry County, North Carolina, Early Tax List in 1771. Land records found:[2]
John Denny enters 300 acres of Land in Surry Co. lying on Bull Run, the waters of Tarrarat River including my Improvements for Complement. 13 November, 1778.
John Denny enters 100 acres of Land in Surry Co. on Bull Run including my Mill for Quantity. 13 November, 1778.
No records after 1778 have yet been confirmed.

Research Notes
It apparently has been a part of family lore for some time that John Denney was killed on 7 October 1780 at the Battle of King's Mountain, North Carolina. It is difficult to ascertain the names of the Patriot soldiers who took part in that battle since no official roster was ever created. Many of the rosters online were compiled based on anecdotal evidence from descendants of men supposedly in the battle. There are a number of rosters out there, some of which include an Elijah Denney, while others do not. No extant online roster includes John Denny/Denney. It has been surmised by some that Elijah Denney was actually John Denney, but the evidence presented is unconvincing. As far as I can tell, what little information is found to support John's death in this battle can be found on these two web pages:
I have found only two men named John Deny/Denny listed as serving in the Continental Army between 1777 and 1779. One served only in a Pennyslvania regiment which was not at King's Mountain. The other was in the 10th Virginia Regiment which was raised in December 1775 in western Virginia. Most of this regiment was captured by the British at Charlestown, South Carolina, on 12 May 1780.
I am not convinced there is sufficient evidence to show that John Denney participated in, or died at, the Battle of King's Mountain. Until such time as additional documentation is found to prove this or another date/place, I will leave his date and place of death blank. (Shirley Dalton 19:46, 24 November 2022 (UTC))
