Biography

John was born about 1793. John Deskins born between 1790 and 1800 Virginia. He passed away about 1849 since he does not appear in the 1850 census with his wife and two children.

Research Notes

  • Sarah Roark raised two children, John Deskins and Isaac Brewer, before marrying Emile Millard aka Miller 07 Oct 1800 Tazewell Co., Virginia. No records are found of a Brewer or Deskins marriage. In her book “Southwestern Virginia Kin”, Ethel Albert says a Daniel Deskins was John’s father. Teresa Martin Klaiber (and possibly in later years Ethel Albert) believed one of the 3 brothers - John. Stephen, or Smith Deskins was the father of John. It seems likely that John was born out of wedlock or an orphan. Sarah Roark would have been either the mother or a foster parent.

  • The 1820 census indicates 3 female children less than age 10. John & Rebecca’s marriage date was 1819. These children were Nancy, Esther, and Sarah. Nancy and Esther were born before the 1819 marriage date. Evidently John had a previous marriage in Virginia where Nancy and Esther were born. This also seems born out by the birth state of the two children's mother (Virginia) given in the 1880 census. Rebecca was born in North Carolina.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

In the Annals of Southwest Virginia, there is an entry for Tazewell County in 1773 that indicates that a John Deskins settled in western part of the county in Deskins Valley. Apparently that source is referring to a John Deskins that is born well before this John Deskins. Might the elder John Deskins be this John Deskins's father?

No, not his father. The John Deskins who first settled in Baptist Valley did have a son also named John, but his marriage and lineage and are known and also mentioned in the Annals.

Deskins-148 and Deskins-87 appear to represent the same person because: I had entered the profile for John Deskins but did not see it was already in WikiTree until I tried adding in his wife Rebecca Holt and found her profile already entered. Should be a clear match, please merge.
