Biography

Born about 1525 William Devereux was the second son of Walter Devereaux, Viscount Hereford and his wife, Mary Grey. He was first returned to Parliament in 1547 as member for Cardiganshire and went on to serve as member for Staffordshire in 1553. [1]

He married Jane Scudamore, widow of John Warnecombe and daughter of John Scudamore and his wife, Sybil Vaughan.[2]The marriage settlement is dated 12 November 1554. [3]

"William Devereux was to reap advantage from the fall of his cousin Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk when in September 1554 he purchased from the crown for nearly 700 pounds the duke's forfeited manor of Atherstone, which adjoined Merevale (Warwickshire)." [4]

He was knighted at Kenilworth on 21 August 1565 by the Earl of Leicester. [5]

In 1572 he was returned to parliament again, this time as member for Warwickshire. He died on 28 September 1579.[6]

No evidence supports his death taking place in Scotland.

IS there any evidence that he died in Paisley?(Abbey Renfrewshire usually means this). Highly unlikely considering the situation at the time.
