Biography

Elizabeth (Dillingham) Wing immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Uncertain Origins

It is believed Elizabeth, wife of John Wing of Sautucket (Harwich, now Brewster) was a Dillingham, and a sister to Stephen Wing's first wife, Osheah Dillingham. However, no contemporary record has been found to confirm or refute this belief. Both the Wing Family of America, Inc.[citation needed] and the Dillingham Project[citation needed] accept Elizabeth as "likely" a daughter of Rev. Edward Dillingham.

It is known that John Wing and John Dillingham (son of Edward) moved from Sandwich to Sawtucket (Yarmouth) at about the same time and that John's brother married Osheah Dillingham. It is worth noting that John and Elizabeth had a daughter Oseah, named after Oseah Dillingham, wife of Stephen Wing.

A mid-20th century typescript, available through familysearch.org, reads:

"... three of these [seven children of Edward] came with him to America, Oseth, Henry and John. All the others probably died young, although the oldest, elizabeth, may have married and remained in England."[1]

It is also believed that the Dillinghams came to New England with the Wings on the William & Francis in 1632, but again, no documentation exists of the family in New England prior to their removal to Sandwich in 1637.

Birth

IF she was the daughter of Edward Dillingham, then she was baptized 2 April 1616 at Cottesbach, Leicester, England.[2][3]

Marriage & Children

Whatever her origins, Elizabeth married John Wing about 1643 in Plymouth Colony.

  1. John[4]
  2. Daniel
  3. Stephen
  4. others?

Death

Dr. Conway P. Wing thinks that Elizabeth was the person meant in the record of Yarmouth, which says:

"Jan. 31, 1692 -- The last of January Old Goody Wing died."

Others are strongly of the belief that this had reference to Deborah, the mother of John Wing. If it really meant Deborah, then she died in her 100th year, or at the same age her father passed away.[CI:117:?4:CI] However, there are very good reasons to think Deborah Wing was dead by 1680 (possibly long since deceased), so this record is almost certainly for Elizabeth, wife of John Wing.

  4. His younger brothers Daniel and Stephen both married and became the heads of families before John took unto himself a wife. The supposition is that he lived with his mother and kept the family together until his brothers were well settled before making a home for himself.[CI:115:?4:CI]27

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:

According to the Genealogy of the Dillingham Family of New England, by Alexander Winthrop & Phyllis D. Archambault -

Pg 18A of Edward "three of these came with him to America, Oseth, Henry and John. All the others probably died young, although the oldest, Elizabeth, may have married and remained in England." Pg 21 "Elizabeth baptized 2 April 1616. She is mentioned in her grandfather Henry's will (1624), but no record is found of her in America." I am skeptical without further proof that this Elizabeth married John Wing.

I've reviewed the narrative as well as the source provided for Sharon. I attempted to find evidence that the Wing Family Association and the "Dillingham Project" support Elizabeth Wing being daughter of Edward Dillingham. Seeking a source for these claims.

The strongest evidence so far (and it's not very strong) is the close association with Oseth Dillingham who married a brother of John, and Elizabeth's naming of a daughter Oseth. AND the fact that Edward did have a daughter named Elizabeth.

I'd like to know the source for the claim that Edward came over with only three children.

In the meantime, I've marked the parents of Elizabeth as uncertain.
