Disambiguation: Sarah Dixon, wife of George Martin, is frequently seen conflated with Sarah Dixon wife of David Pusey. They are not the same person and numerous internet genealogy sites give erroneous information and familial connections which may be undocumented or simply in error. The parents of Sarah Dixon, wife of George Martin, are unknown/undocumented at this time. She should not be reconnected as daughter of John Dixon and Sarah Hollingsworth, as there is no evidence she is their daughter and statements in the Goshen Monthly Meeting minutes that the wife of George Martin was not Quaker. Note about Chatham County

Chatham County, North Carolina, was formed in 1771 from Orange County, North Carolina.[3]
Orange County, North Carolina, was formed in 1752 from parts of Bladen County, Granville County, and Johnston County.[4] (For more information about counties formed from Orange county, see page 3, The State of North Carolina with Native American Ancestry: The Formation of the Eastern and Coastal Counties in North Carolina, by Milton E. Campbell.)
As far as I can determine, there is no indication that this family lived in a county in South Carolina named Chatham (or Orange). There is a George Martin who was born 1763 in Orange county, Virginia,[5] but I don't think he's of this family.[6] Moses Martin, Sarah Dixon's nephew through her husband George, was born in Bedford County, Virginia & served in the War for Independence (Service: NC, Died: Pulaski County, Kentucky).[7]

Residences of George Martin

Note: The Mendenhall Family Association (in its Family Group Sheet for [ Mendenhall Person: I61347 George ) shows Sarah born in in Orange County, North Carolina, but also shows her married to George in Pennsylvania and the mother of his children there. Janet Ariciu's page (for George) shows her birth in Chester, Pennsylvania, which is more likely.
Following information from Mendenhall researcher Herbert Standing, Earlham, Iowa, posted in Rootsweb July 22, 2003:

George Martin removed with his parents in 1737 from "Aston Township, now Delaware County, PA, ... to Caernarvon Township in Lancaster County, PA, not far from the Chester County, PA. ... Moses Martin, Sr. died in 1739.... His family continued on in Caernarvon Township, but in the early 1750's a number of his children, with their families, moved to the Southland, probably four of whom accompanied the Quaker migration to North Carolina.... It appears that the families of George Martin, Moses Martin, Jr, and Susanna Martin and her husband William Adams, made the journey ca. 1754-1756, probably sojourning in Bedford County, VA in 1755. It is not known just where the George Martin and William Adams families first settled in North Carolina. Seven of the children of George Martin are recorded as being born in what was then Orange County, NC. Two of his daughters, Rachel and Mary, were married at Rocky River Meeting, then a Preparative Meeting of Cane Creek MM, in 1781. The family of William and Susanna (Martin) Adams had moved to Surry County, NC by 1787 and became members of Deep Creek MM, now located in Yadkin County, NC. Yadkin County was set offf from Surry County. Deep Creek MM was set off from Deep River MM in present-day Guilford County.... John Martin, son of George Martin, also settled in Surry (Yadkin) County. He married Margaret Hadley, daughter of Simon and Bridget (Foote) Hadley."

Research Notes

The following which originally appeared in the narrative biography is erroneous. It has been left here so that it is not reintroduced as fact.

Sarah Dixon was born after 1724 (the year her parents married)[8] Her father, John Dixon, died in 1742 in Delaware; her mother, Sarah (Hollingsworth) Dixon had died in 1738.[9] in Chester county.[10]

Also in error, previously under See also:

SARAH, b. October 7, 1706 in Rockland Manor, New Castle County, Delaware, m. (1) September 5, 1724 to John DIXON, (2) July 17, 1747 to George MARTIN, (3) on an unknown date to Aaron Harlan MARCH

This Sarah (Hollingsworth) Dixon married second Daniel Nichols who mentioned some of her children and grandchildren in his will.

  6. It's possible, though. Herbert Standing's post says "the families...probably sojourning in Bedford County, VA in 1755." Orange County, Virginia is further north than Bedford County. Perhaps one of the families settled there rather than continuing south. (See Wikipedia's articles on the Virginia counties of Orange and Bedford.) Also, the widow filed in Bedford county.

  8. date ranges given in Glenn Dixon's gedcom were born sometime between 1722 and 1748, died sometime between 1728 and 1831. Initial guess for birth year to facilitate merging and matching was 1735, which isn't feasible with a 1746 or 1747 marriage.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sarah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sarah:

Sarah Dixon, daughter of John and Sarah (Hollingsworth) Dixon, married David Pusey, not George Martin.

Evidence of this is Sarah (Hollingsworth) Dixon's second husband Daniel Nichols naming David Pusey's children in his will. And on familysearch there are sources attached to their profiles that show David Pusey is married to Sarah Dixon daughter of John, though you need to be at a family history center to view more than the names.

Since this profile currently contains a significant biography related to George Martin I would prefer detaching this profile from John and Sarah (Hollingsworth) Dixon over detaching it from George and his children and trying to transfer that to a new Sarah Dixon, however, those profiles appear to be protected. Could someone else do this instead.

I received a private message the says she and George "were likely married in SC as the certificate of removal (dated Mar. 30, 1737) for Moses and Margaret includes George and therefore he was single."

a lead in her mother's profile is that Sarah married George Martin on July 17, 1747. George b 1718 is shown m Hannah Sarah Dixon in 1746 in the Mendenhall database (http://www.mendenhall.org). Sarah (the mother) was born 1706, had a sister named Hannah, married John Dixon 1724, and had a daughter named Sarah (this profile). It is probably this daughter who married George Martin (especially since the mother is shown to have died in 1738).
