Biography

Thomas Doane "was b. July 19, 1781, Cane Creek, Chatham Co., N.C., d. Aug. 25, 1851, (g.s. 1857, ae. 70 yrs. 1 mo. 6 days), German Twp., Bartholomew Co., Ind.; m. Nov. 1802, Martha Hobson, b. Dec. 20, 1778, d. Aug. 18, 1835, ae. 56 yrs., 8 mos., 29 days, dau. William and Sarah (Williams) Hobson; both bur. Hamner Cem., Amity, Ind. After being disowned for marrying out of unity, Thomas and Martha, with their relatives, migrated to the slave free territory of Ohio where all their children were born. In 1821, a Methodist Episcopal Church was organized on Sugar Creek, Blue River Twp. with the names of Martha and Thomas Doan appearing on the membership list. Mr. Doan became a minister of the Methodist Church and was a noted "Pioneer Circuit Riding Minister" in central and southern Indiana."[1]
