Biography

Edmund Dodson was born 13 January, 1796 in Georgia. Edmond is the son of Daniel Dodson and Sarah Peters.[1]

Edmond served in the War of 1812. He enlisted as a private in Capt. Henry Lane's Company of Georgia Militia on the 21st November 1814 and was discharged the 6th May 1815.[2]

Edmond married Rebecca Fuller in Morgan county, Georgia on the 19th of January 1818.[3]

Edmund appears in the 1820 Federal census, in Morgan County, Georgia, in Capt. Tolberts District. Edmund's household appears as follows: 1 male age 16 to 25; 1 female age under 10; and 1 female age 16 to 25.[4]

Edmund appears in the 1830 Federal census, in Fayette County, Georgia. Edmund's household appears as follows: 1 male age under 5; 1 male age 30 to 39; 2 females ages under 5; 2 females ages 5 to 9; 1 female age 10 to 14; and 1 female age 30 to 39.[5]

Edmond was living in Benton county, Alabama in 1840 (Note: Benton county's name was changed to Calhoun county in January 1858). Edmond's household appears as follows: 1 male under age 5; 1 male age 5 thru 9; 2 males ages 10 thru 14; 1 male age 40 thru 49; 1 female under age 5; 2 females ages 10 thru 14; 2 females ages 15 thru 19; 1 female age 20 thru 29; and 1 female age 40 thru 49.[6]

Edmund appears in the 1850 Federal census, in Benton County, Alabama. Edmund's household appears as follows: E Dodson, (Edmund) age 53; R Dodson, (Rebecca) age 50; A Dodson, (Adaline) age 24; J P Dodson (John Peters) age 19; W S Dodson (William S.) age 17; A Dodson (Haris C.) age 15; R Dodson (Rebecca) age 12; E Dodson (Edmon F.) age 11; and S Dodson (Sarah Ann) age 10.[7]

Edmund appears in the 1860 Federal census, in Calhoun County, Alabama. Edmund's household appears as follows: Edmon age, 64; Rebecca age, 60; Adaline age, 33; Edmon F. age, 21 and Rebecca age, 21. Edmon F. and Rebecca are twins, even though their ages are one year apart in the 1850 census.[8]

Edmond's wife Rebecca Fuller Dodson died the 6th of March 1869. Edmond married his second wife Elizabeth Avery on the 10th of January, 1870 in Cleburne county, Alabama.[9]

Edmund appears in the 1870 Federal census in Cleburne County, Alabama. Edmund's household appears as follows: Edmond age, 73; Elizabeth age, 50; Rebecca age, 30; and Sarah age, 13.[10]

Edmond's wife Elizabeth Avery Dodson died sometime before 1873. Edmond married his third wife Christiana Powell on the 9th August 1873 in Carroll county, Georgia.[11]

Edmund appears in the 1880 Federal census in Cleburne County, Alabama. Edmund's household consist of himself and his wife Christa, age 52.[12]

Edmond died the 10th of December 1882 in Cleburne county, Alabama. Edmond had made his last will and testament in Cleburne county, Alabama on the 14th July 1879. Edmond's will was presented to the Probate Court, Special Term, December 26, 1882.[13]

NOTE: Edmond's will contained a clause that today is referred to by the legal community as a poison pill clause for any of his heirs who might want to contest his will. Edmond's clause is in Item Seventh of his will and reads as follows: " Item Seventh, If any of my children or grand-children should attempt to contest the probating of this my will or to cheat or defraud any of my legatees as named in Item four of this my will, then I hereby revoke their share and strictly prohibit my executors or either of them from paying to such one or ones any part of their share bequeathed to them, & revert to the others." Item Four contains the names of Edmond's heirs and what they are to receive

Edmund's will names the following heirs: Wife, Chris; Salina Little, daughter; Caroline Cockrum, daughter; Polly A. Liner, daughter; John P. Dodson, son; William S. Dodson, son; Sarah A. Nunnelly, daughter; heirs of Daniel Dodson, son dec'd; heirs of Emily Liner, daughter dec'd; heirs of Harris Dodson, son dec'd; heirs of Edmund Dodson, son dec'd; and the will states the following " . . . I have made no provisions in this my will for my daughter Rebecca because she has already received of my estate a sufficient amount and all that I intended for her to have . . ."
