DEATH. DOHERTY.—On the 15th inst., at his residence, Benson-street, Benalla West, James Doherty, aged 67 years.-R.I.P. Inserted by his loving wife and family, and John, James and Richard Doherty. [6]

In our last issue we referred briefly to a serious accident which befell Mr James Doherty, of Benalla West, who was severely injured through a dray loaded with wool passing over his shoulder and chest. :Hopes were entertained that the sufferer would pull through, but later on serious complications set in, causing his medical adviser to entertain no hope bf recovery,. and the unfortunate gentleman quietly passed away on- Monday last. The late Mr Doherty, who was a native of the North of- Ireland, was one of our oldest pioneers, having arrived in Benalla as far back as 1857, and with the exception of a few years' absence on a visit to America, had remained in the district ever since. Mr Doherty was well-known in the old coaching days, having .wielded the ribbons for Cobb and Co. On his return from America he secured a position on the railways, .which he held until about 8 years ago, when he retired, taking his compensation. 'The deceased gentleman was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends, who deeply deplore his-death at the comparatively early age of 67, and, join in heartfelt condolences with the widow and family of three grownup sons... his funeral, which was a Large and representative one, took place on Tuesday, the Ven. Archdeacon Davy reading the: burial service, whilst Mr Hanlon had charge of the mortuary arrangements.[7]

Burial

He is buried at Benalla cemetery. [8]
