1708 Marriage to Honour

The Parish Register of St. Anne's Church, Annapolis, records a marriage on 8 March 1708 between John Dorsey and Honour St. --. [9]

Mike Marshall interprets the bride to be Honor Stafford and reports that on 8 March 1707/08 in St. Anne's Parish, Anne Arundel County, he married Honor Stafford, b. 14 Jan 1688/89 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, d. 1756, Anne Arundel County, Maryland (Age 66 years) [2]

If each of them was aged 20, it is likely neither were previously married.

Warfield makes Honor be Honor Elder, and John Dorsey to be John (of Edward). "At sixteen years of age he married Honor Elder, heir of John Elder, a large landholder upon the Patapsco, near Sykesville." [3]

The St. Anne's Parish Register records the marriage of John Dorsey to Honor Sta..... The last letters of tghe name have been lost because the corner of the page has crumbled. Honor Sta... is thought o have been the Honor Stafford who was left personalty in the will of Honor Marriarte, March 25, 1701. [10]

Honor Marriarte was the mother of Rache, who married (1) Benjamin Lawrence and (2), Joh Norwood, nephew of John Dorsey. [11]

Honor Marriarte and here husband Edward], were left personalty in the will of Richard Russel in Lower Norfolk County,m Virginia, in 1667. [12]

Honor Dorsey was living in 1756 when she signed a deed of gift to her children. Since her name does not appear in later deeds, or in the will of her husband, it seems probable that she died soon after this date. . [13]

Research Notes: Is there a John Dorsey of John?

There are two John Dorseys who lived at the same time and must not be confused:

  • John Dorsey of John wrote his will 4 Sep, 1764 and died almost immediately; his will was probated 13 Nov, 1764. His will mentions no wife, but nearly a dozen children. The Executors were Michael and Vachel Dorsey, named in the will of John Dorsey of John.
  • John Dorsey of Edward wrote his will November 27, 1764, two weeks after John Dorsey of John's will was probated, and died almost three years later. His will was probated August 31, 1767. [4] His will mentions neither wife nor children. The Executors were Michael and Vachel Dorsey, presumably the same as above.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Dorsey-3222 and Dorsey-183 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicates -- same dates, same information

There are a number of John Dorseys and several Honour Staffords, all of who have gotten quite mixed up!

John Dorsey married Honor Elder, of whom there are two profiles that need to be merged. He is also shown as married to Honor Stafford. It appears there actually was an Honor Stafford -- whether that was her birth name or married name is not yet clear. One source says her father was Williaam Stafford. I'd suggest that any information related to Stafford be added to that profile until it becomes clear whether she needs to be merged into Honor Elder, or assume an identity of her own with her own husband and children. If she was truly not Honor Elder, then I don't believe she married John Dorsey.
