Biography

William was born in 1805 in Oxnam, Roxburghshire, Scotland.

He married Jane Turnbull of Oxnam.

They emigrated to New Zealand, with their young family, and took up land at Poukawa in the Hawkes Bay district. They built a homestead named Te Mahanga, which became one of the prominent land holdings in the Hawkes Bay.

At some point, William moved to Hawera, leaving the running of Te Mahanga Station to his son William.

He passed away at Hawera in 1901, having seen Te Mahanga pass into the hands of his grandsons W J & AF Douglas.
