Biography

This profile is part of the Downing Name Study.

"John was born in Mason Co., KY on June 21, 1789, the son of Mary Chenoweth and Timothy Downing. The Chenoweth families in this area were poised to cross the Ohio River and settle in Ross Co. It is believed that John accompanied one or more of his parents in this move. How long his parents lived after that is not known, but John is married in Ross County, just shy of this 24th birthday to Mary Boiler, who was 21. She was the daughter of David Boiler and Nancy Fisher. Before his marriage John had served in the War of 1812 from Ohio enrolling on April 27th 1812 for a year as a Private. By the time his service ended in May of the following year, he had risen in rank to Corporal. Ross County became Pike County and in the next eighteen years John and Mary would have 6 children, before moving to Hancock Co., OH in 1831, where their last 3 children were born, bringing the total to 9. Here they lived until 1858, when they and many of their married children went by covered wagon to Morris Co., KS. John died that first winter and was buried in a family plot. Mary lived to the age of 90, dying in 1882, and was buried beside her husband."[1]

"John Downing came here in the spring of 1832, from Pike County, Ohio, cleared a small patch on Section 13, south of the river and put in a crop. The following autumn he brought out his family, consisting of his wife and eight children; the sons being David, George, William, Isaac, and John. One son, Timothy, was born on the Blanchard after settlement. In 1849 George and William went to California, and in 1850 David followed them, but after a few years spent in the gold regions, all returned to this county. About twenty five years ago William removed to Kansas, whither he was soon afterward followed by his father and brothers, Isaac and Timothy. George subsequently went to Iowa, and David, now a resident of Findlay, is the only one of John Downing s children living in Hancock County. "
