William was born in 1651 the son of Francis Drake of Walton on Thames and his wife, Dorothy Spring. Educated at St John's College, Oxford and Middle Temple he first entered Parliament in 1669 as member for Amersham. It was probably in the following year that he married Elizabeth Montagu, daughter of William Montagu and his wife, Mary Aubrey. Together they had three sons and four daughters.
William, who was generally thought to be under the thumb of his father-in-law, did not take a prominent side during the exclusion crisis though he did cast a vote for exclusion. He was the builder of the 1682 market hall in his constituency. [1]
He passed away in 1690 and was buried at Amersham on 24 September.
