Donald was born in Victoria, BC before moving at a young age to Vancouver. After completing high school he studied Mathematics at The University of British Columbia. He married his high school sweetheart in 1975 before completing a Master's degree in Computer Science and Statistics at the University of Waterloo. He and his wife returned to Vancouver where he completed a Ph.D. in Ocean Physics at UBC. Donald was subsequently employed as an environmental consultant in Vancouver. He specialized in computer modelling of physical and chemical aquatic and marine systems, including ocean and open pit lake chemistry and dynamics. He retired from consulting in 2018. His current interests include travel and nature photography, astronomy, and theoretical physics. He and his wife have two children and three grand children.
Donald's FT-DNA Big Y700 results reveal through the Dunbar DNA Project that he is a direct descendent of Gospatrick, 1st Earl of Dunbar (Lineage 1) and that his Haplogroup/sub-clade is R-ZP33/BY123913.
