Biography

VERE ALEXANDER was born to of Perry Alexander Duncan and Sarah Jane Mumper on November 20, 1889 in Fort Collins, Colorado. He was educated in the public schools of Sheridan County, and has always followed the ranching business as his field of endeavor.

Mr. Vere Duncan was married to Miss Ada Frances Sams, daughter of James and Mary Angeline Sams, on 31 May 1919. The wedding took place in Billings, Montana. The Sams family came to Wyoming in 1910, and settled near Sheridan, where they engaged in the cattle business. Mrs. Duncan attended the schools of Hurdland, Missouri, Big Horn, Wyoming, and the University of Wyoming. After completing her education, Mrs. Duncan taught in the schools of Johnson and Sheridan counties.

Mr. Perry Duncan was a pioneer rancher of Wyoming, having settled in Johnson County in 1891 on Mead Creek near Banner, Wyoming. After homesteading, he purchased additional land, and was associated with his brothers in business until 1919. Later moving to Crazy Woman Creek, he homesteaded north and east of the present ranch.

Vere and Ada owned the Beer Keg Ranch, associated with the ranching industry of Johnson County. The ranch was located on the Middle Fork of the Crazy Woman Creek, between Kaycee and Buffalo, Wyoming. They specialized in Hereford cattle of a high commercial grade. The ranch comprised 2,000 acres, and was purchased from Charles and Walt De Voe in 1937 by Mr. Duncan. The brand was "E Z", and was purchased in 1900.

Vere was a member of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, the Grange, Odd Fellows, and served on the local school board for a number of years. Vere Duncan contributed much to the development of the ranching industry of Johnson County, and he was equally well-known for his contributions to the welfare of his community.
