Research Notes

Nathaniel and Daniel Discrepancies

  • Nathaniel and Daniel (sons of David and Elizabeth) both had sons named "Nathaniel (aka Nathan aka Nathanel, etc.)
  • Speculation

There is a good deal of controversy regarding which Nathaniel married Jane Rainey Nov. 6 1782 Caswell Co NC[1]
--- could be the son of either;
--- or, both Nathaniel's could have married Rainey's - and marriages were unrecorded.

Nathaniel (1757 - 1836) m. NC Jane Rainey Most likely is the son of Daniel and Mary Church[1]
Rainey's appear in Will records and North HIco Land Records (This Nath. (for sure in NC) and then to Henderson KY and possibly GA per wills)
(Nathan/Nathaniel) son of Nathaniel & Rainey - m. 1st Elizabeth Humphreys Sep 5 1818; m. 2nd Martha Tyre March 2 1827) (See DSA Oct 97 5#4) [[(Lucy Duncan, dau of Unk m. Joel Stanley Mar 13 1824) Stanley Research]]
Nathaniel (1765 - 1833) (m. Keziah) (son of Nathaniel & Agnes)- May have been in NC; most likely remained in the (N/S) Carolinas; and the son of Mary Church -- presumably went to Henderson KY (as most Nathaniel land records seem to involve "Mary"); and may have gone to GA.
Appears to be a Contemporary Nathaniel m. Rainey (parents Unknown) from Caswell KY to Green Co GA This Nathaniel reportedly did not go/live in Kentucky (although the same NC bond is referenced as that of Mary's son) - purportedly not a duplicate of Mary's son; besides the spouse name -- no evidence to support as same person

    That the Jane Rainey of this entry is a daughter of John Rainey and Elizabeth Hunter Rainey has not been confirmed by reference to any primary source, and researchers are advised to proceed with caution. The will of John Rainey referred to only four children: James Rainey, Thomas, Rainey, and Jenny Rainey. The document also referenced William Rainey (but not described as a child) and the wife of John Rainey

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nathaniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nathaniel:

Duncan-2389 and Duncan-9 do not represent the same person because: Nathaniel Duncan-2389 is not the same as Duncan-9 that I can see.

Duncan- 9 is not the Nathaniel that married Jane Rainey. I believe Duncan-9 with the incorrect tie to Jane Rainey has been floating and has taken on a life of its own. If you have other reasons to believe that they are the same, please let me know.
