Biography

Malcolm MacHeth, first earl of Ross, is said by authorities to be the progenitor of Clan MacKay.[1][2][3] It is most likely that he is the son of Angus MacEth, Earl of Moray, and not the son of Malcolm MacEth.[4] He is also noticed as MacEth, MacEd, MacHead, and others.[5]

He was either the son, or possibly a brother of Angus, Mormaer of Moray[1] and brother-in-law of Somerled.[6][7] He was imprisoned at Roxburgh Castle for rising against King David I.[6] In 1154, Somerled and his nephews, who were the sons of Malcolm MacEth, invaded Scotland and started a civil war. It ended with the release of Malcolm in 1157.[6]

Malcolm, earl of Ross received instruction from King Malcolm IV to provide protection to the monks of Dunfermline[6] sometime after 1157.

He died about 1168.[6]

Research Notes

It is possible he is the same person as Gillandres, which is the patronymic used by the Earls of Ross.

I have a university assignment (about the Macbeth book) with a deadline in September, and your short and clear biography helped me; thanks! This book gave me a big headache with its brave Scottish general Macbeth who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that he will become King of Scotland someday. So historical data from books develop our creative thinking, but it is hard when not founding enough sources. Fortunately, the Macbeth essay examples that I found and your data contribute to my analysis of characters, themes, historical lessons, and messages. Shortly, I think that now I will write great creative essay examples on how Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself, consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife.
