Biography

Robert Dunlap was born 17 March 1798 in Carrickfergus, Antrim, Ireland to William Dunlap and Jane Thompson.

On 30 August 1818 he departed from Carrickfergus Bay arriving at the port of New York on 15 October 1818. Travelling on foot, he arrived in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania on 8 November 1818 where he joined his Uncle Robert who had immigrated a year earlier.[1] By 1822 he had relocated to Cincinnati where he joined the Second Presbyterian Church.[2] In 1824 he returned to Pittsburgh where he married Margaret Carson Ledlie on 11 May 1824.[3] Robert returned to Cincinnati with Margaret where they had four children.[4] Robert wrote a personal history in August 1830 which is the source for much of the information about his family. Robert died on 19 October 1832 in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio in the cholera epidemic.[5] [6] His younger brother William died the following day of the prevailing epidemic[7], and his business partner Gurdon R. Gilmore the day after William. Robert Dunlap is buried in Spring Grove Cemetery.[8]
