It's almost certain that William was born in Ireland. The conjecture that his family was English and related to Lord Ashburton was a hoax or delusion perpetrated on the Maine family. William apparently removed to York after two of his brothers were killed by Indians at the falls of the Androscoggin in Brunswick, Maine. There is a plaque in their memory at an entrance to Fort Andross (an old mill next to the river.)
