Emma Elizabeth Dunstone was born to John Dunstone and Ann (Coombs) Dunstone and baptised on 4 June 1837 in Rame, Cornwall, England. [1]

On 13 December 1855, Emma married Charles Henry Chase in the East Stonehouse Registration District of Devon. [4][5] She was 19, he was 25 and a seaman on HMS Meander. It is not (yet) known what happened to this marriage, because...

On 29 July 1860 in Stoke Damerel, Devon, Emma married John Dunstone Avery, her cousin.[6] On her marriage certificate she gives her surname as Chase, states she is a spinster (!), and names John Chase as her father. The couple had Jane Ann, Bessey, John, William, George, Emma, Edgar, and Laura (who died age 13). Her second husband worked as a rigger in the dockyard.

In 1889, Emma was admitted to Bodmin Lunatic Asylum. [9] It was noted that her last birth was nine years ago, but that this 'attack' started 8 years ago, although no connection was made. Although she is described as violent, all they gave her were tonics! and described how 'her bedroom was all in disorder'. She is described as 'fairly well educated for her station in life'. In the 1891 census John claimed to be a widower, although Emma was not dead.[10]

Husband John entered the Asylum in 1900 after a head injury which made him violent. [11] Emma went to live with daughter Emma Maud and son-in-law Samuel Haywood - but she did not describe herself as a widow!

Emma died on 21 April 1915 in Kingsand, Cornwall, of fibroid disease of the heart and dropsy, aged 78.[14]
