It is uncertain whether John M. Dye's middle name was "Mackmellion," but he did have a first cousin on his mother's side named "John Mackmellion Bayley." John was not named in his father's 1757 will, but the names of his probable sons (Avery, Martin, Hopkins) point toward Avery Dye, Sr. as their grandfather. [1]
"John M. Dye brought a 1754 lawsuit, Dye vs. Barnes, in Richmond County, which was later dismissed. This lawsuit indicates he was a son of Avery Dye, Sr. See the will of Avery Dye, he mentions a lawsuit possible as Dye vs. Barnes again after 1757, over a land dispute."[2]
The Feb. 1797 will of John Dye of Kershaw, Carolina mentions siblings William, Avery, Martin, Hopkins, Catherine (m. John Maples) and Mary (m. William Seale; the will also mentioned John's nephew John Dye Seale.) These are the presumed children of John Mackmellion Dye. These brothers appear on tax records in Bladen County, North Carolina, and after around 1770 in Cumberland County, North Carolina.
