Julie, I think it's more likely that George's birth year is incorrect and that he was a younger son of Avery Dye.

From work I've been doing on our tree, I have a George Dye (c. 1715-1810) m. to Mary (Bruce), and a George Dye (C. 1771-1872) m. to Rebecca Ann. Is there a George Dye, CA 1730, in between the two? In other words, am I missing a son of the 1715 George, who would then have been the father of the 1771 George?
