Biography

William Joseph Edgeton was born about 12 January 1809 in Painted Post Township of Steuben County, New York, USA. Some sources state birth as 1798 same location. He was the son of Bradford Edgerton

Marriage

William was married (probably in Tioga County circa 1825) to Miss Wealthy Mudge, daughter of Joshua and Frances Mudge. Wealthy was born circa 1798 in Otsego County, New York (possibly Unadilla, where her father was born).

Children of Wm and Wealthy

William and Wealthy had a family of eight children – Emily, Richard, Harriet, Jane A., Frances, Joshua, Charles and George – all but the youngest born in Jackson.

Residence 1830

William “Edgeton” was listed as a head of household in the 1830 Federal Census of Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (pg. 15). His household was enumerated with the following individuals:
1 male “of 30 and under 40” (William);
1 male “under 5 years of age” (son Richard);
1 female “of 30 and under 40” (wife Wealthy); and,
2 females “under 5 years of age” (daughters Emily and Harriet).
The next two households enumerated on the census roll were those of Aaron and Joseph Mudge, who were probably relations of William’s wife Wealthy.

Residence 1840

William’s household was recorded again in the 1840 Federal Census of Jackson Township, Tioga County, PA, (also under “William Edgeton”), as follows:
1 male “of 40 and under 50” (William);
1 male “of 10 and under 15” (son Richard);
2 males “under 5 years of age” (sons Joshua and Charles);
1 female “of 40 and under 50” (wife Wealthy);
1 female “aged of 10 and under 15” (daughter Emily);
2 females “of 5 and under 10” (daughters Harriet and Jane); and,
1 female “under 5 years of age” (daughter Frances).:
Circa 1840 – 1849, William removed with his family from Pennsylvania to LaGrange County, Indiana.

Research Notes

William Edgerton (aka “Edgeton) was born in Painted Post, New York circa 1798, the second son of Bradford and Anna Edgerton. Circa 1820, William removed from Steuben County and settled, along with his elder brother, David, in Tioga County, Pennsylvania – just south across the New York/Pennsylvania border. William settled in Jackson Township and David in nearby Sullivan. A sister, Maria, also lived in Tioga County (Lawrence and Farmington) with her husband, Jared Butler.

Edgeton-15 and Edgerton-1140 appear to represent the same person because: This was previously merged in the wrong direction. There was no one in his family named "Edgeton" at his birth. Therefore, "Edgeton" as LNAB is absolutely incorrect. He changed his name to Edgeton as an adult, for reasons unknown to be, but that can only properly appear as AKA, not LNAB. His children and other descendants would correctly have Edgeton as LNAB.

Edgeton-89 and Edgerton-1093 appear to represent the same person because: Edgerton on census records. Same find a grave on both profiles

Edgerton-1093 and Edgeton-15 appear to represent the same person because: Same daughter. birthplace. approx. year. If connection of Bradford Edgerton as father is correct, original spelling was likely Edgerton (large Edgerton family group settled in Connecticut, ca. 1630).
