Ambrose Edwards Sr is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A036542.
SAR insignia
Ambrose Edwards Sr is an NSSAR Patriot Ancestor.
NSSAR Ancestor #: 153291
Rank: Patriotic Service

Some (possibly erroneous) sources claim he was born in England. No primary source known. He seems more likely to have been born in King William County, Virginia, where he first appears on January 2, 1756 when he witnessed a deed of gift between James Edwards the Elder of King William, and his son, James the Younger, of Spotsylvania County.[1] Ambrose is likely a son of James, or possibly of John and Sarah Edwards, who appear in King William County deeds as far back as 1722.[2]

In King William county, Virginia, Ambrose furnished supplies in support of the Continental Army, during the American Revolutionary War. [3]

Ambrose is honored for his Patriotic Service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as Ancestor #A036542. DAR records indicate that Ambrose's first wife was Wealthean Butler and his second wife was Barbara X Finch. Application for membership in the Society of the DAR has been made by the descendants of his sons, Butler Edwards, who married Elizabeth Ellett, and of his daughters, Wealthean Edwards, who married Wilson Coleman Pemberton; and Susannah Edwards, who married Tunstal Quarles. [4]

Two men named Ambrose Edwards appear in the 1782 tithables lists of King William County, Virginia. One has only two slaves, the other has fifteen. A Samuel Edwards, another likely relative, also appears in the lists.[5]

Researcher's Notes

According to his Find A Grave memorial, Ambrose is buried at Leatherwood Plantation, in Henry county, Virginia. [6]

The parents of Ambrose may be erroneously assigned. Any evidence of this relationship? The name Thomas Nathaniel Edwards comes from "Edwards Heirs" (1925) and the book does not name an Ambrose as one of his sons. https://archive.org/stream/edwardsheirs00unse/edwardsheirs00unse_djvu.txt
