Sophia was born in 1734 married, widowed, remarried, and died in 1797. She was laid to rest in Hope Moravian Old Original God's Acre Clemmons, Forsyth County, North Carolina.[1]
Sophia and Edward married 25 January 1755 according to "Fairfax Monthly Meeting Virginia" records.
"Sophia & Edward Matthews m 25-1-1755 reported orderly accomplished"[2]
Sophia is named as the wife of Edward Matthews and a child of the late Richard Richardson in a 1761 chancery court case over Richard's estate: Trust Estate of Richard RICHARDSON - 2 Nov 1761 (MSA S512-3784; 1/36/4/84-3670)[3]
When Edward died he left three children: Sarah, Elizabeth, and Richard Matthews. The Fairfax Virginia Monthly Meeting records say they were expected to moved with their mother and step-father to Bush River Monthly Meeting in South Carolina, however they settled in New Garden North Carolina by 30 August 1777. It is unclear whether or not they lived in South Carolina for nine years before settling in North Carolina. Sophia married a man ("Petticoat") who was not a member of the Friend's Society (i.e. Quakers).[4]
Elizabeth Was disowned by the Quakers after marrying Basil Petticoat, a non-member. On being visited by Quakers, she thanked the Friends kindly but was not interested in appealing, or in making satisfaction.[1]
There is quite a lot of information in the Maryland Quaker records on Edward Mathew and his wife Sophia.
Elizabeth and Basil Peddycoart raised five children - three of Elizabeth's with her first husband, and their two children.
