Edward ELLARD[1] was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Ellard he was baptised on the 6th Feb 1810 at Northampton, All Saints, Northamptonshire. The entry also records he was born 31st Dec 1809.[2] Edward was the fifth of seven children for Thomas and Elizabeth.
At the time of his marriage in 1838 Edward is working as a shoemaker and living in Poplar, London, Middlesex.
Edward married Mary Elizabeth Brotherton on 7th February 1838 at the church in the parish of Poplar in the county of Middlesex after the calling of banns at Tower Hamlets. Mary signed with her mark x. Witnesses to the marriage were Wm Smith and Frances Boppis (?) who also signed with her mark x.[3][4][5]
In 1851 Edward and Mary were living at St George of the East, 10 Spencer Street, Middlesex with seven children.[6] James, Maria, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, William and Margaret before emigrating to Australia in 1854.
The barque Pestonjee Bomanjee, 596 tons, Captain J. Montgomery, sailed from Southampton on 18th June 1854 and arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia on 7th October 1854. Edward Ellard travelled with his family, and ships records he is listed as Edward, 44, Shoemaker 463/2 St. George in the east, Middlesex , his wife Mary 42, children Maria 14, Thomas 12, Maria 8, William 6 and Margaret 1. [7] Sadly Elizabeth died before the voyage. James is not listed on the ships records but local SA records suggest he travelled with the family on the Pestonjee Bomanjee.
The following articles appeared in local newspapers at the time:-
South Australian Register Monday 9th October 1854 Saturday, October 7th :- the barque Pestonjee Bomanjee, 595 tons, Montgomery, Master, from Southampton June 18th 1854. 21st ship from England to S.A. with government passengers for 1854; 5 births and 8 deaths on the passage ; William H. Motherall, surgeon-superintendent.
Adelaide Times, October 9th. The Pestonjee Bomanjee . . . . when in lat. 9.41' south, long. 83.26' west, was spoken and boarded by the American sloop of war Saratoga, 52 days from Thiela. The captain of the American sloop reported that they had succeeded with the Japanese Government in obtaining a coaling station there for the convenience of the communication between China and America. The Pestonjee Bomanjee also spoke a large English emigrant ship, 57 days out, bound from Liverpool to Port Macquarie.
South Australian Government Gazette, February 1st 1855 The Pestongee Bomanjee arrived from Southampton on the 7th October, having made the voyage in 112 days ; 303 souls were landed. Five births and ten deaths were the casualties during the voyage. Fever to a considerable extent prevailed during the voyage. It seems to me that cleanliness had not been sufficiently enforced ; and I have little doubt that the prevalence, if not the origin of the sickness, was caused by that neglect. In all other respects the surgeon-superintendent used every means to promote the comfort and health of the people, so that there is little doubt that his want of experience in the management of emigrants was the cause of the laxity of discipline at first; which, during the voyage, he found it difficult if not impossible to rectify. The stoppage of the certificate for return passage money to England, was considered as a sufficient warning to him to act with more decision if he were again entrusted with the charge of an emigrant ship ; as his Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor was pleased to approve this recommendation, and to order that the certificate should be withheld. H Duncan M.D., Immigration Agent
