Biography

Gavin Elliot is a member of Clan Elliot.
Gavin Eliott of the Grange, Roxburghshire
sometimes spoken of as the first Laird of Midlem Mill.

Gavin (sometimes called Gawin) of Grange, is the ancestor of the family of Midlem Mill, and also of the Elliots of Minto. He is recorded in 1643 in possession of Midlem Mill, Prieston in Bowden Parish and part of Grange in Ancrum Parish. The Elliot farm was 20 acres.[1]

Gavin Ellliot was the fourth son of Gilbert Elliot of Stobs. He was born at Stobs in 1625, the year that Charles 1st became King. [2]

He was on the Committee of War for Roxburghshire in 1648, and on record in 1663 as a Justice of the Peace for Roxburghshire.[3]

He was living at Grange, in the Parish of Hounam in south east Roxburghshire, when he married Mary Bennett in 1644 in Jedburgh, though she died soon after, in 1645, leaving no children.[2]

On September 15, 1646, in Pebbles Parish, Peeblesshire; Gavin Elliot married Margaret (Mary) Hay;[3]daughter of Andrew Hay of Haystoun in Peebles. Margaret Hay was born in 1625 in Peebles and died after 1700 at Midlem Mill, Roxburghshireneed citation

The children of Gavin Elliot and Margaret Hay were: (Family 753f)[4]

Robert Elliot of Midlem Mill d.by Sep 1725
Gilbert Elliot, the first Lord Minto; of Headshaw and Minto b. 1651
Margaret, who was the mother of Rev. Robert Lithgow of Ashkirk.

NOTE : these early generations are uncertain, for lack of documentary evidence, records having been lost in a fire at Stobs in 1712, the exact connection between the Eliotts of Stobs and the Elliots of Minto may never be properly verified. Note the change in spelling between these two families.

An old rhyme explains it all -
The double L and single T
Descend fromm Minto and Wolflee
The double T and single L
Mark the old race that in Stobs do dwell
The single L and single T
The Eliots of Saint Germains be
But double T and double L
Who they are, nobody can tell"
