Andrew Elliot Jr (aka Eliott) was born January 30, 1651, in East Coker, County Somerset, England. He was the oldest son of Andrew Elliot Sr., and his first wife, Grace Woodier.

After his mother's premature death giving birth to Andrew's younger brother, William, in February 1654, their father remarried and had two daughters, Andrew's half-sisters. The entire Elliot family emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay colony in about 1670, settling in Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts.

On December 9, 1680, Andrew Elliot Jr. married Mercy (Mary) Shattuck in Beverly, Massachusetts. She was born on March 14, 1655 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. He was a mariner and was made a Freeman of Beverly in 1683.

Andrew Jr and Mercy Elliot were semi-secret members of the Society of Friends (Quakers), a non-conformist religious movement that was actively persecuted both in England and Massachusetts at that time. Quakers did not baptize their children nor were they listed in official church records. Apparently, Andrew Elliot Sr. was not officially a Quaker and he was able to get his grand-children registered in the Town records. He served on one of the Salem Witch Trials juries, a very perilous exercise at a time when many Judges and officials considered Quakers nearly as big a threat to public order as practicing witches. Andrew Jr and family probably attended Quaker meetings in the meeting house built by Thomas Maule of the "House of Seven Gables" and preserved to this day by the Essex institute in Beverly, Massachusetts.^[2]

Andrew Jr and Mercy Elliot had several children who died as infants. They had four who lived to maturity, all in Beverly, Massachusetts:^[3]

Andrew Elliot Jr was a merchant marine sailor. Unfortunately, he was lost at sea off Cape Sable in the North Atlantic, when returning to port at Beverly, Massachusetts, on September 12, 1688.^[4] His wife Mercy (Mary) remarried to Benjamin Trask a few years later. She survived until April 2, 1710, passing away then in Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts.

Andrew was born in 1651. He passed away in 1688.

"Nestled among the hills and meadows of the heart of Somersetshire, the garden spot of England, is the little hamlet of East Coker, three or four miles SW from Yeovil, on the London & Southwestern Railway. Here, almost under the shadows of afine old parish church, dating back to the fifteenth century, was the home for a century or more of the Eliot family previous to their departure for America and religious liberty. Less than one hundred miles away in Cornwall is yet to be found the seat of a powerful family of the name, resident there since 1400, and flourishing previously for several centuries in the neighboring county of Devonshire. "

"In 1538 there was passed in England a law compelling every parish to keep a complete record of baptisms, marriages and burials. It appears to have gone into effect with more or less force between 1540 and 1550, and to have shown itself assoon in Devon, conrwall and Somerset, as in any other part of the kingdom. It is, therefore, not remarkable that we at once find record of the Eliots in E. Coker Somersetshire."

Note N83 Page: 17 Text: ANDREW ELIOTT, the dear and only son of Andrew Eliott, whose mother's name was Grace, and was born in East Coker, in the County of Somerset, in Old England, being on board a vessel appertaining unto Philip English, of Salem, one Bavidgebeing master; said vessel being then at Cape Sables, by an awful stroke was violently thrown into the sea, and thus perished in the water, to the great grief of his said father, the penman hereof, being 37 years, on the 12th day of September,about 10 o'clock in the morning, according to the best information, in the year of our Lord 1688.
