MYTH's BUSTED

Mary Ellis 1740-1771 in many trees has been shown as the daughter of Joseph Ellis 1724-1793 & Elizabeth Perkins, BUT the 1779 Henrico Co., VA will (probated 2 April 1782) ^[1] of John Ellis 1685-1782 (brother of Joseph Ellis 1724-1793's) names Hezakiah Puryear as one of the heirs in his will along with his other children. And Hezakiah Puryear was named in the 3 April 1782 Henrico Co. VA. estate division of John Ellis 1685-1782. ^[2]

In the 1849 'A Memorandum of the Ellis Family' by Thomas H. Ellis does not reference a daughter named Mary for John Ellis 1685-1782, yet the will and estate division for him suggests the Mary Ellis who married Hezakiah Puryear was his daughter. THe same booklet on Joseph Ellis 1724-1793 references a daughter Mary Magdalen, but DOES NOT state who she married, and a daughter Ann Ellis who married Hezekiah Puryear. Based upon this Hezekiah Puryear married 1st cousins, NOT sisters.
