Rowland Ellis was a Quaker Minister born at Bryn Mawr, Dyffrydan, Marionethshire, Wales, in 1650, who immigrated to Pennsylvania with his second wife and family in 1697.[2][3] He became a Quaker in 1672 and was imprisoned[1] in 1676.[3] He visited Pennsylvania with his son Rowland in 1687, and returned to Wales,[3] leaving his young son in Pennsylvania in the care of his uncle, John Humphrey.[2] Rowland immigrated with his family ten years later and settled in Bryn Mawr, Merion County, Pennsylvania,[3] leaving his paternal estate in Wales with his daughter by his first marriage.[2]
Rowland Ellis was a member of the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly,[4] representing Merion in 1700.[1][3] Ellis translated the first Welsh book printed in America, Ellis Pugh's Annerch ir Cymru, appearing in 1727 under the title A Salutation to the Britains.[1] Rowland sold his Merion plantation and bought land in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, where they made their home.[1]
Rowland Ellis, Gent., died in September 1731,[3] at the home of his son-in-law, John Evans in Gwynedd[1][5] (Richardson says he died at Plymouth, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania).[3] He was buried at the Gwynedd Monthly Meeting grounds there.[3]
