William Ellzey was the son of Lewis Ellsey; he was given land in Loudoun County in his father's will, and was also the executor of his estate.[1] His mother is uncertain; on WikiTree he is linked to Elizabeth Travers, and on FamilySearch he's linked to a Mary Wheeler. Ellzey was "a prominent lawyer and a member of Tidewater society."[2]
William repeatedly bought and sold land in Fairfax County, Virginia.[3] He had Fleetwood Farm built around 1775 in Loudoun County, Virginia, in an area that was once part of Fairfax County. The farm is now on the National Register of Historic Places.[2]
The NRHP file includes additional information about Ellzey; he was a member of Truro Parish, and was a businessman and lawyer. In 1760, Ellzey and other prominent citizens "attempted to promote a wine-producing industry in the county." After Ellzey's death, "the property was bequeathed to Albert Russell, husband of Ann Harris Frances Ellzey." It remained in the Ellzey family until 1806.[2]
William married Alice Blackburn in 1755. They had children, including:[4]
William Ellzey's will was dated 29 July 1795. He mentioned:
William named his "beloved wife" (Alice) executrix and his son William as the executor of his estate. Son William Ellzey, one of the executors, produced the will at a court held for Loudoun County on April 12, 1796. Matthew Harrison Junior and Albert Russell were his securities. Bond was five thousand pounds. [5][6][7]
In 1743, a William Ellzey and his wife Alice sold two tracts of land to Thomas Sangster. The record notes that he was of Loudoun County, and that he was an attorney at law. Part of this fits with this William, but he and Alice allegedly married in 1755.[3]
