Page Launceston Examiner 3 October 1905; Text A COLONIST OF OVER 70 YEARS THE LATE MRS. J. BADCOCK. There passed away at her residence, 265 Charles-street, early yesterday morning Mrs. Esther Badcock, widow of the late Mr. John Badcock, of Emu Plains, Westbury, at the age of 75 years. The deceased lady was one of the very few old colonists left in Tasmania, she having arrived here over 73 years ago, being only 18 months old when she landed in this state with her parents. The late Mrs. Badcock was born at Thetford, Norfolk, England, her parents being Mr. and Mrs. John Elmer. They landed at Circular Head, and almost immediately went to or near Woolnorth, as Mr. Elmer came out for the V.D.L. Co. It was a wild, bleak region, and the accommodation for the new arrivals was so disappointing that they felt completely disheartened, but, seeing that it was no use to make matters worse, they soon settled down to the customs of the island, which was then the home of bushrangers and blacks, and human life was not counted dear by such men. Mrs. Badoock often related thrilling stories of things that came under her observation, and was very well informed on early Tasmanian history. When 11 years old her parents removed to Launceston, and after a residence here of five years proceeded to Emu Plains, Westbury, where they resided for many years. The deceased married Mr. John Badcock, an agriculturist, 50 years ago last August at the Carrick church, the officiating clergyman being the Rev, Thos. Reibey (now the Hon. Thos. Reibey, the squire of Entally). Her husband died 15 years ago. The deceased lady was a member of the Methodist denomination, and was always an earnest worker on its behalf. She leaves a family of five sons and four daughters. Of the former, Messrs. Fred., Charles, Richard, and Robert are married, and George is single, all being engaged in farming pursuits in the Westbury and Exton districts. Of the daughters, three are married, viz., Mrs. J. H. Crawford (Melbourne), Mrs. F. J. Reid (Exton), and Mrs. W. D. Peter (Launceston). The funeral will leave her late residence at noon to-day, the interment taking place at Hagley.; [Source Record] iv. Elmer-199 and Elmer-2249 appear to represent the same person because: Hi Marian - I'm sure Elmer-2249 is a duplicate of Elmer-199 - Alan
