Jonathan Elmer was the third son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Garrett) Elmer, born in 1685 in Hartford, Connecticut Colony in the New World. The following year he was baptized in the Center Church on May 8, 1687. Many of the church records in those days marked the baptism rather than the birth.
He moved to Norwalk before his marriage to Mary _____ in 1709. They resided in Wilton, then a part of Norwalk.
His name first appears in the town records of lands in 1712. In 1716, he was rated an inhabitant, and drawn as a grand juror. In 1733, he was a deacon in the church. He conveyed land in 1735 to Edward Elmer.
In 1746, the family moved to Sharon. He first purchased of Caleb Jewett, the lot on which Gov. Smith lived, and there resided till 1751, when he sold it to Jonathan Gillet and removed to what is now called the Martin place. He resided in Sharon until his death, which occurred January 5, 1758, at the age of seventy-three.

Page 128: Elmer, Deacon Jonathan, was from Norwalk, and came to Sharon in 1746. He first purchased of Caleb Jewett, the lot on which Gov. Smith lived, and there resided till 1751, when he sold it to Jonathan Gillet, and removed to what is now called the Martin place, near the stone bridge. There he lived till his death, January 5, 1758, at the age of seventy-three. He was highly respected as an officer in the church, and as a member of society. He had several sons, who lived in town, but there are none of his descendants bearing his name, remaining among us.
Jonathan is confirmed through Y-chromosome DNA testing. Robert Elmore and Esco Elmer match on 36 out of 37 markers (see FTDNA kits 364027 and 369990) thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA Edward Elmer.
Big Y and YSEQ testing of descendants of Edward Elmer's sons Edward and Samuel have shown that men on this Y line carry SNPs R-A2276, R-A2278, R-A2280, R-A2281 and R-A2283 as family level SNPs.
Jonathan Elmore resided in Wilton, then a part of Norwalk, CT. His name first appears in the town records of lands in 1712. In 1716, he was rated an inhabitant, and drawn as a grand juror. He conveyed land to Edward Elmer (a brother) in 1735. In 1733, he was a deacon in the church. In a history of Sharon, CT, by Gen. Chas. F. Sedgwick, it is stated that Deacon Jonathan Elmer came to Sharon from Norwalk in 1746, and resided there until his death in 1758. Several of Jonathan's children accompanied him to Sharon. One of them, Samuel, became a Colonel in the Revolutionary army. Col. Samuel Elmer adopted the spelling Elmore for his name, it having been so spelled in his commission, and he was also told by some British officers that Elmore was the way it was spelled in England. He appears to have persuaded some of his brothers, nephews and nieces to adopt this spelling. About 1801, Samuel moved to Vermont, where the town of Elmore was named after him, and presumably the mountain and state park bearing the name Elmore that appear on a map of the state.
