Biography

Sarah was born in 1664 in Podunk (East Windsor), Connecticut Colony, Edward and Mary's last child. Her parents died, Edward in 1676 and Mary in 1677. She spent the next several years dealing with litigation regarding the estate. During this time, she married Thomas Long, probably before 1688. They had a daughter. She outlived her husband and died 13 December 1741 in East Windsor, Connecticut Colony at the age of 77.

Page 635, referring to her father's estate: Two inventories were gathered for Edward Elmer. On 6 June 1676 "An inventory [was] taken of the estate of Edward Elmer deceased lying at Podunke," which totalled £369 6d., of which £338 1s. 6d. was real estate: "meadow land by estimation 45 acres," £180; "7 acres of pasture land cleared," £21; "the north end of the pasture not cleared, with swamp, 60 acres," £30; "the dwelling house & orchard by the house," £35; "a barn," £24; "7 acres of upland to the homestead fenced & improved," £14; and "1163 acres of upland at 6d. per acre," £29 1s. 6d.; on 7 June 1676 "An inventory [was] taken of the estate of Edward Elmer deceased being at Hartford," which totalled £102 14s. 9d., and included no real estate. The total of the estate was therefore £471 15s. 3d. against which there were £45 12s. 5d. in debts owed by the estate. At the end of the Hartford inventory was a list of those "concerned in the estate": "widow Ellmar; John Elmar aged about 30 years; Samewell Ellmar aged about 27; Edward Ellmar aged about 22; Mary Ellmar aged about 18 years; Sarah Ellmar aged about 12 years" [Hartford PD 3:168-69, Case #1884] The inventory was exhibited at court 6 and 7 September 1676 and administration was granted to the widow and her three sons; distribution was made to the widow, £23; John, £82; Samuel, £80; Edward, £92; Mary, £70; and Sarah, £70 [Hartford PD 3 (courtside):155-56; Manwaring 1:195]. On 20 April 1681 "Edward Elmore summoned the legatees of the estate of his father, Edward Elmore, deceased, to appear at court" to consider the claims of debtors of the estate; the court found the accounts "so litigious" that they appointed auditors to go over the accounts of the administrators. On 18 June 1696 Thomas Long complained against John and Edward Elmer, the administrators, that he had not received that part of the estate "that is due to him in right of his wife" [Manwaring 1:195].
