His father, Edward, was 50 and his mother, Sarah, was 39.

Elijah (25) and Mercy Goodale (21) were married on August 6, 1778 in Amherst, Hampshire, Massachusetts, USA.

Mercy was born in July, 1757 in Amherst, Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay. She was the daughter of Isaac Goodale and Huldah (Burt) Goodale.

They had eight children in 19 years:

  2. Achsah Elmer (1784–1838)
  3. Elijah Elmer (1786–1804)
  4. Anna Elmer (1789–1865)
