Lewis Ely was born in West Springfield, Massachusetts on 9 Dec 1756, the son of Thomas Ely and Sarah (Merrick?).[1] He married Anna Granger on 23 Oct 1777[2] and lived in West Springfield, Massachusetts for nine years before moving to Granville, Massachusetts. There, he purchased and cleared a farm, and built a saw mill and a grist mill.[3]
In the spring of 1799 he exchanged his property in Granville for land in Ohio. He left with his family on 12 Jun 1799 with ox-teams and arrived in Deerfield, Portage County, Ohio on 25 Jul. There, much suffering was experienced on account of the scarcity of provisions. They were supplied from settlements in Pennsylvania, the nearest of which was Georgetown, 40 miles distant.[3]
Lewis Ely died in Sep 1826 in Ohio[4] and is buried in Deerfield Cemetery in Deerfield, Portage, Ohio.[5]

There are two photos on Lewis Ely's Find A Grave memorial. One headstone photo shows an inscription of "Sept. 5 1826" and the other shows "Sept. 25 1826".
