Biography

Burial: 2 Sep 1913. Evergreen Cem, Ft. Scott, Kansas.

Notes

Full Name, Death, Divorce, Burial: Death Certificate.

William M. Emery worked as a contractor in Ft. Scott and later was in the monument business in Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri. He and/or his brother Andrew probably placed and carved the large granite stone which marks the Emery family graves in Evergreen Cemetery in Ft. Scott, Kansas.

The death certificate says that he died of cirrosis of the liver, code 124B, with a contributory cause listed as "acites abdominalis." William's brother Andrew E. Emery supplied the general information for the death certificate. He lists his father's place of birth as Lawrence Co., PA, and his mother's place of birth as Mercer Co., PA. The undertaker is listed as Ely Paxson, 410 S. Street, (probably) Ft. Scott, KS. The death certificate gives his birth year as 1857; the family Bible says 1856. I have chosen to believe the family Bible in this case, because the entry was probably made by William's mother.

1900 Missouri Soundex shows Wm. M. Emery living alone at 120 5th Street, Carthage, MO; Marlin Twp., Jasper County. Birth date is shown as Sept 1858. Also checked the actual 1900 Census. It agrees with the above, except that I could not read the street name. It obviously is a short cul-de-sac off Grant Street. Other information: b. Pa; father b. Pa; mother b. Pa.; occupation, marble dealer; months not employed in previous year: 0; marital status: single; no other information about his prior marriage.

Pauline Brown (RBrown7554@@aol.com] reports that her grandmother [Leora Lefa Hall Emery, wife of Fred Vian Emery] wrote: "William Emery married a lady whose name was Jennie. they adopted a boy and named him Leroy Emery." Fred Vian Emery was the son of Andrew Eli Emery and Ella Myrtle Baker.
